The Self-help Group Experiences of Family of an Adult with a Mental Illness

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to understand the self-help group experiences among family of an adult with a mental illness, and to explore the meanings of experience. Using focused group interview(FGI) and individual interview, researchers conducted the interviews with seven family members who had participated in family self-help group(Guidance club) at psychiatric rehabilitation facilities in Busan from 2014 to 2018. Collected data based on the interview and focus group research method was analyzed by Phenomenological Methods. As a result, 5 essential themes, 13 major components, and 54 sub-components were derived. In essence of participants¡¯ experience, the five themes follow ; ¡®a burdensome seat¡¯, ¡®a place to open up¡¯, ¡®a field for change¡¯, ¡®a field to declaring solidarity¡¯ and ¡®a position of taking the lead¡¯. Based on the results, suggestions for policy and practice were discussed to activate the family self-help groups of an adult with a mental illness.
